Some decision making processes may prove difficult when the parties are so deeply engaged and committed to their positions that they cannot find common ground. While chairing the Council Working Parties on the Rio+20 process with meetings in Brussels, New York, Geneva and worldwide wherever the preparatory meetings were being held, I won the reputation of an honest broker. With more than 20 parties at the table and over 100 persons in the room, I was able to create space where mutual understanding and agreement was made possible.
